Modern diagnosis starts with a laptop plugged into the ECM as often as a wrench: reading fault codes, tracing sensor circuits, chasing intermittent electrical gremlins. Shops split between dealerships (structured, warranty-heavy, best training), independent shops (variety), and fleets (steady hours, the same trucks, often the best schedule). It's problem-solving with six-figure machines waiting on your answer.
Two proven doors: a 1–2-year diesel technology program (community college or trade school — the faster route to a dealership) or starting in a shop as a lube tech/shop hand and learning up, which fleets in particular support. Auto mechanics cross over constantly — the fundamentals transfer, diesel just pays better. Veterans with heavy-equipment or motor-pool experience are actively recruited. Employers' real screen is the same as every trade: reliability, curiosity, and whether you troubleshoot systematically or just start throwing parts.

Diesel generally pays more, has a deeper shortage, and works on higher-stakes equipment (a broken truck bleeds money, so shops pay for speed and skill). Auto skills transfer directly, which is why diesel is the classic raise for experienced auto techs.
Not on any realistic timeline. Long-haul freight, construction, and agriculture will run diesel for decades, the existing fleet needs service regardless, and techs who add high-voltage/EV skills as hybrids arrive will be MORE valuable, not less.
