The real day-to-day (no hype)
- The weather sets your schedule. Heat waves and cold snaps are your Super Bowl — long days, real overtime money, exhausted techs. Shoulder seasons go quiet. Budget and pace yourself around the rhythm.
- It's the fastest trade to enter. 6–12 month certificate programs or direct apprenticeships get you EPA-certified and working faster than electrical or plumbing tracks. The depth comes on the job — the first two years are the real school.
- The heat-pump wave is a career tailwind. Electrification policy and efficiency incentives are converting millions of furnaces to heat pumps. Techs fluent in them (and in smart systems) are the trade's fastest-rising earners.
- Watch the sales-pressure shops. Some residential outfits comp techs on replacement sales, turning repairs into upsells. It's the industry's ethics fault line — the best techs and best employers diagnose honestly and profit anyway.
How people break in — or switch in
Three doors, all open: a certificate program (6–12 months at community colleges — get EPA 608 included), a formal apprenticeship (3–5 years, paid, deepest training), or the direct door — install-helper jobs that train on the job and promote sharp workers to service tech. Air-conditioning belts of the country hire green constantly in spring. Any mechanical, automotive, or electrical dabbling in your history counts — say so.
